چکیده

We investigate hydrodynamic instability of a steady planar detonation wave propagating in a circular tube to three-dimensional linear perturbations, using the normal mode approach. Spinning instability is identified and its relevance to the well-known spin detonation is discussed. The neutral stability curves in the plane of heat release and activation energy exhibit bifurcations from a low-frequency to high-frequency spinning modes as the heat release is increased at fixed activation energy. With a simple Arrhenius model for the heat release rate remarkable qualitative agreement is found with experiments that vary the mixture dilution, initial pressure, and tube diameter. The analysis contributes to an explanation of the spin detonation which has essentially been absent since the discovery of the phenomenon over seventy years ago.

High resolution WENO simulation of 3D detonation waves

In this paper, we develop a three-dimensional parallel solver using the fifth order highresolution weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) finite difference scheme to perform extensive simulation for three-dimensional gaseous detonations. A careful study is conducted for the propagation modes of the three-dimensional gaseous detonation wave-front structure in a long square duct with differe...

Analytical studies of the dynamics of gaseous detonations.

The dynamics of gaseous detonation is revisited on the basis of analytical studies. Problems of initiation, quenching, pulsation and cellular structures are addressed. The objective is to improve our physical understanding of the development, stability and structure of gaseous detonations. New insights that have been gained from analytical investigations are emphasized. Specific problems discus...

Determination of the Equilibrium Parameters of Gaseous Detonations Using a Genetic Algorithm

The present work is concerned with the development of a new algorithm for determination of the equilibrium composition of gaseous detonations. The elements balance equations, and the second law of thermodynamics (i.e., the minimization of the Gibbs free energy of products), are used to determine the equilibrium composition of the detonation products. To minimize the Gibbs free energy with tradi...

On the Effect of Diffusion on Gaseous Detonation

The development and propagation of detonations is examined in the presence of diffusive processes. The difference between the inviscid and viscous models is quantitatively evaluated for one-dimensional propagating detonations. First, an investigation of viscous effects is performed on one-dimensional pulsating unsupported Chapman-Jouguet detonations using a simplified one step kinetics model fo...

High resolution GPU-based flow simulation of the gaseous methane-oxygen detonation structure

A gaseous detonation is a combustion-driven, compressible wave propagating at supersonic speeds. Experimental visualizations and numerical simulations confirm that detonation waves have a complex, multi-dimensional, cellular structure generated by various gasdynamic interactions (Ohyagi et al. 2000; Ng and Zhang 2012). Except in special combustible mixtures (such as argon-diluted mixtures) with...
